Epitalon: The Telomerase Tetrapeptide in Ageing Research
Epitalon (also spelled Epithalon) is one of the best-known compounds from a Russian research programme on short "bioregulator" peptides. It is discussed mostly in connection with telomeres and ageing.
What Epitalon is
Epitalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide: Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly. It was designed to reproduce the activity attributed to Epithalamin, an extract of bovine pineal gland. Being only four amino acids long, it is simple and inexpensive to make.
An acetylated variant, N-acetyl Epitalon, is sold as a more stable form, but direct published comparisons are scarce.
What the research reports
- Telomerase activity. Cell-culture studies report increased telomerase expression and telomere length in human somatic cells. Telomeres are the protective caps on chromosome ends, and they shorten as cells divide.
- Pineal and melatonin-related effects. Animal studies look at melatonin rhythms and pineal gene expression.
- Lifespan in animal models. Some rodent and fruit-fly studies report effects on lifespan and tumour incidence.
- Gene expression. The proposed mechanism is that the peptide interacts with DNA and chromatin and changes how genes are expressed.
How strong is the evidence?
This is the key question for Epitalon:
- Most studies come from one research group and its collaborators.
- Independent replication is limited, especially for the more dramatic findings.
- Proposed DNA-binding mechanisms for tetrapeptides are not widely accepted outside that group.
- Human data are limited and mostly come from older studies that don't meet modern trial standards.
None of this means the findings are wrong, but it does mean they should be treated as preliminary.
The wider bioregulator family
Epitalon belongs to a series of short peptides (Khavinson peptides), each described as targeting a specific tissue — for example Pinealon, Vesugen and Cartalax. The same evidence caveats apply to all of them.
Comparing Epitalon listings
- Price per mg matters. Epitalon is often sold in larger vials, and prices vary widely. See our Epitalon comparison page.
- Check whether a listing is acetylated or not — the two forms have different masses.
- Request a batch CoA. Even simple peptides can be mislabelled.
Summary
Epitalon is a simple synthetic tetrapeptide with a long but narrowly sourced research literature on telomeres and ageing. Treat the findings as preliminary. PeptideCompare provides no dosing or usage guidance, and nothing here is for human or veterinary use.
