Thymosin Alpha-1: The Thymic Peptide in Immune-Signalling Research

Thymosin alpha-1 (Tα1) is one of the better-characterised immune peptides. It is licensed as a medicine in a number of countries, which gives it a larger clinical literature than most research peptides.

What thymosin alpha-1 is

Tα1 is a 28-amino-acid peptide with an acetylated N-terminus. It was first isolated from thymus tissue, and its synthetic form is called thymalfasin. It is approved in several countries outside Europe for specific indications, but is not licensed in the UK. Research material is for laboratory use only.

How it is thought to work

  • Toll-like receptors. Tα1 acts on TLR2 and TLR9 on dendritic cells and other antigen-presenting cells, starting signalling cascades (via MyD88) that shape immune responses.
  • T-cell maturation. It is reported to promote T-cell differentiation and function, reflecting its thymic origin.
  • Cytokine balance. Studies describe shifts in interferon and interleukin production that depend on the immune context.

What the research looks at

  • Vaccine-response models (as an adjuvant)
  • Infection models
  • Immune function in ageing (immunosenescence)
  • Combination studies in oncology settings

Other thymic peptides

Compound What it is
Thymalin A peptide mixture extracted from calf thymus. It is less defined than synthetic Tα1, so batch documentation matters
Thymagen The dipeptide Glu-Trp, identified in thymus extracts
Thymosin beta-4 Despite the name, not an immune hormone — an actin-binding protein (see our TB-500 guide)

LL-37, the human cathelicidin, is another immune peptide often listed alongside Tα1, but it works through direct antimicrobial and receptor-mediated effects.

Comparing thymosin alpha-1 listings

  1. Check the N-terminal acetylation. It is part of the native molecule; mass-spec data should match about 3.1 kDa.
  2. Compare price per mg on our thymosin alpha-1 comparison page.
  3. Don't confuse thymosin alpha-1 with thymosin beta-4 — they are unrelated.

Summary

Thymosin alpha-1 is a thymus-derived immune peptide with a substantial clinical literature abroad but no UK licence. PeptideCompare provides no dosing or usage guidance, and nothing here is for human or veterinary use.
